EducationDyslexia Teacher/Tutor in Austin, TX
I received a Master's degree from Stanford in educational communication and another from Rutgers in educational psychology. I have more than 30 years of experience tutoring and teaching large groups at all levels, from elementary to college. I teach because to me, teaching is a learning process in which all involved are transformed and become better human beings.
I love what I do. I've had great success teaching dyslexic children, English and Spanish as a second language and helping prepare students for standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, TOEFL, TEXES certification exams and STAAR exams. I have extensive training and experience. I received training from the Dyslexia Training Institute and graduate credits from the University of San Diego. I'm trained in The Barton Reading & Spelling System, which is a one-on-one tutoring system that will greatly improve the spelling, reading, and writing skills of children who have dyslexia.
I teach reading and writing because I'm a good reader and writer, and I know how to help others develop these abilities. I also have a deep understanding of the grammatical structures of two languages, English and Spanish. I can make the most difficult grammatical concepts seem very easy to understand. Reading and writing are fun when you become skilled at it, and with my help, you will get there in no time at all.
I do a great job tutoring children. I teach them by playing games, doing exercises, developing online exercises for vocabulary. When I teach a language other than the native tongue, I ask students to make presentations about different topics to learn the intricacies of a language. I do not consider the learning of a language as an end in itself, but as an exercise in communication and learning about other culture, something so necessary in this globalized world.
I love teaching because I love learning, and my ideal as a teacher is to pass on this love to you. Look at my webpage http://aliciagarzamartinez.com/tutoring.html

I have a masters from Stanford University in educational communication and another one from Rutgers University in educational psychology. My major for the latter masters was cognitive processes and language development. I have graduate credits in information process approach to cognition (reading and perceptive processes) and dyslexia. I received training from the Dyslexia Training Institute and graduate credits from the University of San Diego. I'm trained in The Barton Reading & Spelling System, which is a one-on-one tutoring system that will greatly improve the spelling, reading, and writing skills of children who have dyslexia. For students who need to develop pre-reading skills, I use the Foundations in Sounds program with great success. It is a pre-reading program which develops the necessary skills of discrimination, memory, and sequencing of sounds. I have experience teaching and tutoring elementary school dyslexic children in English and Spanish, and bilingual. I use a multi-sensory approach. I teach through fun games, and my students actively participate in their own learning. Most of all, I use plenty of positive praise and rewards, so that their self esteem is greatly improved as well.
