Private tutor in Austin, TX
Education
BA in English, Honors, Vassar College; MA in English, full fellowship, Indiana University at Bloomington; JD University of Texas at Austin
Experience
I have taught writing at St Edward's University since 2002, and before that I was a guest teacher at many Austin public schools, working with 8-18 year olds on their writing. I have tutored 8-22 year olds in writing and reading for ten years. Students tell me that I change their relationship to writing, helping them realize that writing can be enjoyable and that they have the ability to be good at it. Everyone has their own style of learning, their own particular strengths, and a teacher's job is to identify and promote a student's strength. I am a practicing writer, having published a book-- Gated Grief-- that was a finalist for the Texas Book Award in 2013.

Hobbies
I love photography and movies. Younger people are visually oriented, which can give them a way into enjoying writing, as good writing creates images for the reader. I have two sons, ages 24 and 21, who are not traditional learners. They have taught me a great deal about the need for teachers to attune themselves to their students. I love swimming in Austin's spring fed pools and hiking along her creeks. And I love writing in the middle of a hike!
