Experience
I love tutoring children, teens, and young adults because they capture and inspire me; not to mention, they are frequently pretty hilarious—I have a particular fondness for millennials and their quirky sense of humor. They also have a particular brand of hopefulness I admire. Teens especially tend to resonate with me, and I find deep fulfillment in sparking excitement and intellectual curiosity in adolescents and young adults who report frustration, anger, and boredom with their learning experiences. Helping others find ways to arrive at new knowledge is my passion, and I have years of experience helping students of many ages transform information into knowledge. I have a background in psychology, so I mostly work with students in this area, but I’m also qualified to help those needing a tutor in English/Grammar/Literature at any grade level, art history & classics, poetry, essay-writing (in particular, admissions essays), and ESL students who speak Spanish as a first language. I’m happy to report that all of the essays I’ve helped students craft and refine have resulted in successful admission to universities and graduate schools, including a prestigious MA program in London! Populations of Students I’ve Served: high school juniors and seniors writing college admissions essays; MA candidates writing graduate school admissions essays; teens (ages 13-17) on probation for drug-related offenses; K-1st ESL students; pre-schoolers and kindergarteners experiencing bereavement; students in lower and middle school seeking after-school tutoring; children, adolescents, and adults working through and living with: ADD**, ADHD, PTSD & Trauma-related issues, Impulse Control Disorders, OCD, Conduct Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Attachment Disruptions, and Anger Management-related issues. Relevant Courses Taken (BA Level): Introductory Psychology; Developmental Psychology; Biology & The Human Condition; Survey of Abnormal Behavior; Research Methods in Psychology (including SPSS); Interpersonal Communication; Effective Parent-Child Relations; Social Psychology; Physiological Psychology; Human Sexuality; Personality Psychology Research; History & Systems of Psychology; Sociology of Deviant Behavior; Sociology of Education; Contemporary Issues in Psychology; Independent Study in Cognition & Perception. Relevant Courses Taken (MA Level): Human Growth & Development; Counseling Skills & Techniques; Counseling Theories; Legal/Ethical Issues in Health Care; Counseling Diverse Populations; Critical Evaluation of Research; Systems Theories in Counseling; Assessment Techniques; Intro to Marriage and Family Therapy Assessment Techniques; Drugs: Therapy & Abuse; Assessment, Diagnostics, & Treatment; Group Counseling; Career Development & Planning; Holistic Practices in Mental Health; Crisis & Trauma Management. Publication: Johnson, M.G., Muday, J.A. & Schirillo, J.A. (2010). When Viewing Variations in Paintings by Mondrian Aesthetic Preferences Correlate with Pupil Size. Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity, and the Arts, 4(3), 161-167. **Note: As a postmodern thinker, I don’t believe in labeling people with “disorders,” but for clarity, DSM language is used here. (Despite being postmodern, I am exceptionally well-versed in the DSM, by the way!)

Hobbies
While the intellectual part of me stands as a dominant force for sure, I'm also a creative, and many of my jobs have been in the music industry. I play bass and drums and my boyfriend plays guitar, so we spend a lot of time making music together. (Rock and roll, obviously; we were both raised on Zeppelin.) I have a major soft spot for Jazz. I also love gardening, especially cacti & succulents! I have two very silly, very scruffy, and loving terriers that we rescued, and in my free time I volunteer with our littlest guy, Leo, who is a certified therapy animal. I dearly love to read, and I spend a lot of time with my nose deep in some modern American poetry, science fiction, psychology/neurobiology research, and even some graphic novels from time to time on particularly nerdy days. I appreciate a sharp wit, and your son or daughter will probably enjoy my teaching style and vibe if they can work with constructive criticism, are open to new ideas, and want learning and studying to be as painless and fun as possible.
