University of Texas (Austin, TX), PhD Candidate in American History, projected graduation 2013
ExperienceI am a graduate student in the History Department at UT-Austin, and I have a BA in Philosophy from Brown University. Having been a teaching assistant at the college level, I am fully versed in grading standards and I can help you, my student, perform at your highest possible level. I scored between 750 and 800 on all of the writing/reading/verbal standardized tests I have taken in the past.
I can help you expand your vocabulary, polish your writing skills, and offer strategies for fast and effective reading comprehension; I have a very effective strategy to improve reading skills, especially in preparation for the verbal sections of standardized tests. I can tutor in English (language and literature) at any level, from elementary through high school; and I can offer tutoring in American History as well.
Learning how to read critically and write clearly tends to improve academic performance across the board; students with strong reading and writing skills can absorb and communicate information effectively, even when they are unfamiliar with the material. Mastering these basic skills is as important for college and graduate students as for elementary and high school students.
HobbiesThere is no such thing as a stupid question. I am still a student myself, so I am still dealing with some of the same stressors you are. I can sympathize with a heavy workload, and I can also offer strategies for how to get a heavy workload done.
In my experience, most students (especially in high school) struggle with reading comprehension; once you get a handle on the best way to absorb information, you become a more effective student in any subject.

A bit disorganized. My child didn't receive the type of instruction she needed. Tutor not cognizant of the time spent tutoring and so I ended up paying more than an hour; more than I expected to pay. Very rigid on her approach to teach rather than identifying student's needs and adapting to their learning style. Otherwise, nice individual.
Merry is helping my daughter with SAT/ACT prep-tutoring. Which has been successful in raising her SAT score! I would recommend Merry as my daughter has really connected with her, she is very intelligent with personality, kind & well rounded individual.
