This quote has deep meaning for me as an educator and articulates why I am passionate about teaching and learning. Having studied Sociology and Anthropology (BS) at Virginia Commonwealth University and Sociology and Education (MA) at American University in Washington, DC, I knew that education- both formal and informal- would become my life. I began my career as a special education teacher through the organization Teach for America in 1999. More than a decade and a half later, I continue to teach, manage programs, and specialize in educating both children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Through my work in teaching students who had the greatest learning needs, I truly believe everyone can and will learn- it’s all about finding the right strategy! I pride myself in being tenacious enough to never give up on any child or adult I have taught. Using real world examples, manipulatives and tactile materials, and total physical response I personalize the learning experience whether teaching 2nd graders place value or analytical writing for the GRE. I have a special place in my heart for reading, English/Language Arts, and verbal reasoning. I am an avid traveler having lived in southern Africa and the United Kingdom; I have visited over 20 countries from Russia to Australia. Asia is my next summer destination! In my spare time I coach elementary soccer, take a range of dance classes, listen to live music in Austin, and consider myself quite a chef (my specialty is cupcakes.) I look forward to instilling my passion for education in YOU!
