Experience

My interest in the Deaf Community began when I was a junior in high school, with my decision to take American Sign Language (ASL) as a foreign language. From the first day of class, I was hooked - the language was flexible, visual, expressive and beautiful beyond any other language I had previously been exposed to. I continued signing and attending Deaf events up until I graduated from high school, and then went on to pursue a major in Deaf Studies: Human Services with a minor in Psychology at Towson University's Honors College. Throughout my undergraduate career, I worked at Gallaudet University's Summer Youth Program (SYP) for hearing, hard of hearing and deaf adolescents. These programs included an "Immersion into ASL" program, which encouraged hearing and hard of hearing students who were unfamiliar with ASL to immerse themselves in the Deaf world while at Gallaudet, and learn ASL in the process. Having worked there for three summers, my experiences not only were unforgettable, but also allowed me to further develop and improve my ASL skills to where I am today. I recently graduated this past December (2014) with a Bachelor of Science in Deaf Studies. I was also incredibly honored to have been chosen as the "Winter Commencement Ceremony Signer," and I got to perform the National Anthem and Maryland's state song in ASL in front of my entire graduating class! I recently moved from Maryland to Texas to further my education at the University of Texas Austin by pursuing my Master's in Social Work. I've been given the opportunity to be a graduate assistant to one of the professors who teaches a "Signing for Social Workers" class, and I'm looking to continue my tutoring career!
