Experience

My primary goal as a tutor is to empathize with my students. I do not use the word "empathy" lightly, like a synonym for "sympathy." Instead, I use the more precise definition, which means identifying with my students' thoughts and intellectual struggles. I am able to intuit others' ideas by how they comprehend information, including their academic coursework. Because of this intuition, I am able to help my students relate to their classwork by connecting new information to academic information the student already understands, or by relating the information to the student's life in some way. I am particularly adept at helping students who struggle with reading comprehension, essay writing and editing, grammar and mechanics, college entrance essays, and literature. I can help with English subjects from the most basic level to Advanced Placement-level courses. Critical thinking is critical to success in one's academic career and beyond. I try to center my tutoring sessions around the student's coursework but also, and most importantly, around the student's needs as an individual. I earned my bachelor's degree at Northern Arizona University, and in my spare time, I enjoy reading, writing, and philosophizing with my friends.
