Education

BA, Honors Journalism from Wayne State University, 3.5 GPA MA, Middle Eastern Studies from University of Texas at Austin, 3.8 GPA

Experience

I have worked as a teaching assistant at University of Texas at Austin, in which capacity I lectured in US history and Middle East history and politics and tutored students extensively in writing, reading, and critical thinking skills. I scored in the 98th percentile in the "Verbal Reasoning" section of the GRE and received a 5 out of 6 in the "Analytical Writing" section. I want to be a tutor because I gain immeasurable pride in helping others to navigate difficult questions. I am planning to be a teacher in either history or English, as I adore both subjects.

Hobbies

I have an immense passion for helping others, inside and outside the purely educational realm. In fact, I love meeting new people in general. For instance, on my free time, I have volunteered at the Center for Survivors of Torture in Austin, helping refugees from war become better acclimated with life in the United States. Before I came to Austin, I worked in journalism in the City of Detroit, covering stories about the challenges faced by city communities, particularly education. This work required me to be resolute in meeting new people in order to interview them about their experiences. It also required me to demonstrate trust. Between obtaining my Bachelor's degree and my Master's degree, I lived in the Middle East, where I studied Arabic and lived with a Jordanian family. The lack of English language around me forced me to change the way I think in order to speak Arabic better. The experience also provided me with a wider range of reference and an ability to assist people from divergent backgrounds. In addition to my experience as a teaching assistant at UT-Austin, I continue to hold educational events--including invited lectures--at the university for topics in which I have scholarly training. I hope to use my developed skills working in diverse settings to tailor my tutoring efforts to whatever your needs and goals. Whether you simply seeking better preparation or feel lost and confused in your reading and writing requirements at school, I know I will have the necessary level of patience and compassion to help you to achieve all the higher.
