Private tutor in Austin, TX
PhD and MA, English Language & Literature, University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) BA, Honors English (minors in Latin, Women's Studies, and Comparative Literature), Trinity University (San Antonio)
I have been teaching and tutoring at the high school and college levels for almost 20 years. Having worked for several years as a professor of writing and literature at the University of Michigan, Trinity University, and the University of Maryland, I especially love helping students bridge the gap between high school and college in terms of their critical reading, literary analysis, and argumentative writing skills. I get excited talking about how to write strong essays, gabbing about grammar, and discussing literature, especially the nineteenth-century stories, poems, and novels that are often assigned in AP English courses. I’m also a classics and history buff; my dissertation was on how the archaeology of ancient Greece and Rome figured in Romantic and Victorian literature. My goal as a writing coach is to help you improve the essay under review and your writing skills more generally, which is a skill valued not just in school but also in the workplace and the real world. I will provide you with the detailed, personalized feedback that teachers often don’t have the time to offer to each individual student. How can you make your argument about “The Yellow Wallpaper” clearer, more compelling, and more concise? What do teachers mean when they say to “elaborate on your analysis”? What the heck is a comma splice again? I can answer questions like these, guiding you to become a more independent, confident writer. And don’t worry: I’m meticulous and supportive, but I am definitely not stuffy; my goal is to keep you learning while you're laughing.

I am a co-founder of the Austin Editors Guild, which helps me fulfill my apparent need to organize programs and events. I have also volunteered as an instructor for Austin Bat Cave and as a member of the Student Outreach Committee of Women Communicators of Austin, teaching students and professionals how to write résumés and cover letters and how to prepare for job interviews. For fun, I read (historical biography, fantasy, and Victorian fiction are my favorite genres), make paper and paper crafts, visit botanical gardens and museums, and binge-watch British crime dramas. In addition to being an avid dog lover (my husband and I have three rescues at home), I support various wildlife conservation efforts, especially when it comes to my beloved panda, red panda, and okapi. My favorite punctuation marks are parentheses and an effectively placed em dash.
