Lillian J.
Private tutor in Austin, TX
Education
I studied Spanish at the University of Washington in Seattle, and minored in Communications, and graduated in 2008. The Fall semester of 2007 I spent 5 months studying abroad in Granada, Spain. I'm currently obtaining my MA in Spanish at Saint Louis University. In 2015 I spent the year at the Madrid campus in Spain. I took one MA Spanish class at Texas State University in the Spring of 2016. I'm currently taking a small break from the masters program and will return Fall 2017.
Experience
Tutoring experience: • Semester of Service Learning at Centro de la Raza (Seattle, WA) • Private English tutor to native Spaniards (all ages) (Cádiz, Spain) • Tutor - high school Spanish (Austin, TX) Teaching experience: • Teaching Assistant - SPAN 1010 | 16 hours | Fall 2015 | Saint Louis University - Madrid | Dr. Olga Muñoz • Language & Culture Assistant - Primary & Infant School (Cádiz, Spain). 2009-2010. Other Spanish teaching experiences: - Practiquemos Español - Austin Public Library (Austin, TX). I lead the weekly Spanish conversations for people of all ages and levels in Spanish proficiency. Additionally, I coordinated weekly informational and cultural emails. • “Spanish on the Rocks” lead - informal Spanish speaking group (Austin, TX) • Bilingual presentations in high school & University Spanish classrooms (for my work as a Study Abroad Coordinator) • Spanish Club - OwnLocal (current place of employment). I co-founded the Spanish club, OwnLocos, which met weekly on Thursday. The majority of my BA classes were Spanish related (language, grammar, and culture) and I've completed 7 Graduate level courses of MA Spanish (language & culture). I want to be a tutor for a variety of reasons: - I love teaching. I pride myself in my ability to connect with a variety of ages, and patiently understand how they learn. I also love witnessing the confidence when a student realizes or fully grasps a concept or knows the answers. It's brilliant! - I love learning. Teaching is the best way for learning. Every time I teach a grammar concept, or a fun song to teach the Spanish question words, I learn something my self. It keeps my brain wheeling and sharp. - As I'm on the path to obtain my PhD in Spanish (Spanish linguistics and teaching Spanish through social media), I want to obtain as much experience as I can with Spanish, teaching, and teaching Spanish. - I do not speak as much Spanish at my current job as I would like and I am looking for more opportunities to be surrounded by the thing I love, teaching and speaking Spanish.
